Steve Suffern
About the Artist
Having grown up in Ontario cottage country, I have always been deeply inspired by the natural world and its magical ability to relax, renew and restore. My landscapes, in both oil and acrylic, reflect this passion, offering an intimate glimpse into how I perceive the panoramas I hold dear.
Similarly, my portrait paintings of iconic musicians and cultural figures are dynamic and bold.
These honour the artists who have not only inspired me, but have played an intrinsic part in shaping and reflecting the culture in which they lived. These portraits are a labour of love, capturing not just a physical likeness but the energy and spirit of the artists.
Color plays a central role in my process. I use vivid, high-contrast hues to evoke both landscapes and soundscapes, pieces designed to be both seen and felt. Through both bodies of work, I explore how environments, natural and cultural, shape our inner worlds. Whether painting a dramatic horizon or the face of a legend, I aim to create work that resonates across the senses.
Artist Statement
My work explores the powerful connection between our natural and cultural environments and the emotions they evoke. Through vivid colour, bold contrasts, and expressive landscapes and portraits, I aim to create paintings that capture not only what we see, but what we feel.
